November is a month of celebrations the world over. In India, we celebrate Diwali, Chhath Puja and Guru Nanak Gurupurab among other festivals this month.
Amidst all of these, many supporters of cancer research take time to save up for a cause that is close to their hearts. ‘No Shave November’ is a movement that seeks to spread cancer awareness and gather funds for cancer research and prevention.
Many men pledge to let their beards and moustaches grow untamed to embrace something that most cancer patients are worried about losing: hair. Whatever they would normally spend on shaving products, services and cosmetics, they contribute to a cancer foundation of their choice.
Women too can participate in this by forgoing their trips to the salon and contributing that money to cancer research. And whether you choose to trim your hair or not, you can always be a part of the movement by spreading the word on cancer prevention, screening and early diagnosis.
Here’s what we are doing at Onco.com
- We are pulling out all stops to spread the word on prevention and screening this month. Follow us on instagram and facebook for tips and information, which you can share in your own social circle.
- Men who are participating by not shaving, can share their ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures to show how much their beards have grown in a month. We will re-share these images to encourage more participants and thereby enable more contributions.
- Since nutrition is an important part of cancer recovery, our senior dietitian Dr Krishna Priya is conducting an FB Live session where questions on diet during chemotherapy will be answered.
Login to our facebook page to watch this session on 6 November (Friday) at 4 pm. You can send us your nutrition queries at community@onco.com and we’ll make sure we answer them.
- Our cancer support circle Talk Your Heart Out is meeting on 8th November (Sunday) at 4 pm to interact with leukemia survivor Amit Dubey who will share tips on men’s health and fitness. Come join us on zoom using these details:

Since caregivers are a pillar of any cancer community, we’re speaking to psycho-oncologist Bincy Mathew about caregiver burnout. Watch out for her video on our blog this month.
- Men’s health is an oft ignored topic. So this month we invite expert oncologists to talk to us about the prevention and treatment of cancers that are most common among men. Watch this live panel discussion on our facebook page on 20th November 2020.
What will you be doing?
We can’t answer that, but we’re sure you can pick at least one of the above events to be part of.
So grow your beard, save up for cancer research (every little counts) and do share our posts on cancer awareness so that more people benefit from them.
