What is Immunotherapy?

Immunotherapy, also called biological therapy, is a kind of cancer treatment. It stimulates and strengthens the body’s immune system to identify and destroy cancer cells. It works either by boosting the patient’s immune system which in turn destroys cancer cells or removing barriers that restrict the immune system from fighting against cancer. Several cancers have been treated successfully by immunotherapy including but not limited to bladder cancer, brain cancer or brain tumour, breast cancer, prostate cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer, head and neck cancers, leukaemia, kidney cancer, liver cancer, lung cancer, skin cancer, melanoma and lymphomas. Immunotherapy gives durable results and fewer side effects compared to other treatments but not in all patients. Your doctor will perform some predictive tests to determine if you are the right person for immunotherapy.

Factors that Impact the Cost of Immunotherapy in Hyderabad

Immunotherapy is gaining momentum because of its efficacy in treating cancers resulting in durable responses with fewer side effects. For some patients, immunotherapy worked effectively when other treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy didn’t. Because of its efficacy and patented drugs, immunotherapy may be costlier but it is still affordable in Onco Cancer Centres.

On average, the cost of immunotherapy in Hyderabad ranges between Rs. 1,00,000 – Rs. 4,00,000 per cycle.

Usually, it requires 3-4 cycles and may extend further if there are still cancer cells left in the body. Each cycle has to be repeated for every 21 days depending on the recovery.

Immunotherapy Procedures and their Benefits

There are different types of Immunotherapy including monoclonal antibody therapy, checkpoint inhibitors, dendritic cell therapy, T-Cell therapy, oncolytic virus therapy, cancer vaccines, and immune system modulators. Each therapy has its own efficacy and is used to treat different cancers. Some treatments stop or slow the growth of cancer cells, and some destroy or stop cancer from spreading to other body parts. Sometimes two or more types of immunotherapy can be combined to treat cancer. Every cancer patient is not suitable to get immunotherapy. You have to undergo some predictive tests to check whether the immunotherapy will be effective for you or not.

You can receive immunotherapy once you have qualified for all the predictive tests to evaluate if the immunotherapy will work for you. The predictive tests are:

Frequently Asked Questions

Several cancers have been treated successfully by immunotherapy including but not limited to bladder cancer, brain cancer or brain tumour, breast cancer, prostate cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer, head and neck cancers, leukaemia, kidney cancer, liver cancer, lung cancer, skin cancer, melanoma and lymphomas.

Our body consists of an immune system that helps fight infections and diseases. When our immune system is not strong enough to combat cancer, immunotherapy is suggested to stimulate and strengthen the immune system to treat certain cancers. Immunotherapy is given through intravenous infusion for a certain period of time. The given immunotherapy drug produces immune cells in the body and activates the immune system in such a way that it is capable of identifying and killing cancer cells.

After receiving immunotherapy, your immune system starts strengthening in order to combat cancer cells. You will be monitored with regular check-ups and blood tests to see the treatment progression and to make sure you are not developing complications. Within a few weeks to months after treatment, you may also face some side effects that can be managed by medication. Keep your healthcare team informed of your side effects and get necessary medical help.

There are different types of Immunotherapy including monoclonal antibody therapy, checkpoint inhibitors, dendritic cell therapy, T-Cell therapy, oncolytic virus therapy, cancer vaccines, and immune system modulators. Each immunotherapy works in different ways. Some treatments stop or slow the growth of cancer cells, and some destroy or stop cancer from spreading to other body parts. Two or more types of Immunotherapy can be combined to treat cancer.

After immunotherapy, you will have to undergo regular check-ups, scans, blood tests to know if your cancer is responding to immunotherapy. Often, people show a delayed response to treatment. Though you are facing mild side effects, immunotherapy still works against cancer. Certain side effects are a sign that the treatment is affecting the immune system positively. Many people are observed to have improvement in health after immunotherapy though they experience mild manageable side effects.

Like all cancer treatments, immunotherapy also causes some side effects. But side effects may vary from person to person depending upon the type and stage of cancer, type and dose of immunotherapy, and patient’s health condition. During or after immunotherapy, you may face skin reactions at the injection site, flu-like symptoms such as fever and chills, weakness, tiredness, nausea or vomiting, low or high blood pressure, and difficulty breathing. Certain immunotherapy drugs can also cause other side effects, observe your condition regularly and don’t forget to inform your healthcare team about your experiences.

The choice of immunotherapy drug and its dose depends on the stage of cancer too. Early-stage cancers (Stage I & Stage II) can be treated with less number of treatment cycles, so it will be less expensive whereas late-stage cancers (Stage III & Stage IV) require treatment for a longer duration with the increased number of cycles, so the cost will be high accordingly. Therefore, the cost varies from person to person depending on the type and stage of cancer, number of sessions required and the patient’s unique needs. Ask your doctor about the approximate final cost of your treatment.

Generally, every cancer treatment involves a multidisciplinary team. It is a panel of cancer experts from various specialisations. For immunotherapy, a medical oncologist and a haematologist (for treating blood cancers) are primarily involved. Along with these specialists, a paediatric oncologist (for children), pathologists, a surgeon, nurses, and other health care professionals may also be involved based on your case.

Speak to your health insurance company about what services they will pay for. Many insurance companies are covering the costs of immunotherapy. We suggest you contact your insurance company before planning the treatment and know the insurance process.
