What is Hormone Therapy?

Hormonal therapy, also called endocrine therapy, is one of the cancer treatment modalities. Certain prostate and breast cancers make use of hormones such as progesterone, oestrogen, and testosterone to grow tumours and spread fastly. To treat such types of cancers, hormonal therapy is given. In this therapy, hormones will be blocked from reaching the tumours or their growth will be inhibited to stop the growth of cancer cells.

Hormone therapy lessens the chances of cancer recurrence. It works efficiently in reducing cancer symptoms in men with prostate cancer who aren’t able to have surgery or radiation therapy. Hormone therapy also causes some manageable side effects such as hot flashes, loss of ability to have sex, weakened bones, erectile dysfunction, diarrhoea, nausea, fatigue, vaginal dryness, changes in periods if not yet reached menopause, mood changes, etc.

Treatment Type: Hormone therapy
Treatment Goal: Blocks hormones production or hinders them from reaching tumours and stops the growth of cancer
Route of Administration: Pills to take orally at home, or injection at doctor’s clinic
Span of Hormone Therapy: 5 years or more
Hospitalisation: No
Success Rates: 80% to 90% in most cases

Hormone Therapy Procedures and Benefits

Hormone therapy is given either to treat cancer or to ease cancer symptoms. It works in two ways, reducing the body’s ability to produce hormones or interfering with hormone functions on the cancer cells. Hormone therapy can be given before surgery or radiation therapy to shrink tumours or after the main treatment to prevent cancer from coming back.

Hormone therapy is available as pills to take orally at home, or as an injection at a cancer clinic. The injection may be given as a shot into a muscle of the arm, thigh or hip. Sometimes, it is also given subcutaneously (under the arm, leg, or stomach).

During this treatment, you will be monitored at several periods to know if hormone therapy is working for you. If you are receiving hormone therapy for breast cancer, your doctor will do regular check-ups including a physical examination of the neck, underarms, chest, and breasts, along with a mammogram. If required, your doctor may also perform imaging tests and lab tests.

If you are receiving hormone therapy for prostate cancer, you should undergo PSA tests several times. If PSA levels go down or remain the same, your cancer is responding to treatment. But if PSA levels go up, it is a sign that treatment is not working for your cancer. In this situation, your doctor will look for other best treatment options.

Hormone therapy is given only to treat cancers that use hormones to grow and spread. It is recommended either to treat cancer or to ease cancer symptoms. Hormone therapy is available as pills to take orally at home, or as an injection given at a cancer clinic. The injection may be given as a shot into a muscle of the arm, thigh or hip. You may experience some manageable side effects that are different in men and women. Such side effects include hot flashes, loss of ability to have sex, weakened bones, erectile dysfunction, diarrhoea, nausea, fatigue, vaginal dryness, changes in periods if not yet reached menopause, mood changes, etc. Keep your healthcare team informed of any side effects you face during or after hormone therapy.

A gynaecologist and a medical oncologist are the right doctors to prescribe the right hormone therapy for your cancer type.

Hormone therapy blocks the production of hormones in order to treat cancers. So, this treatment interferes with regular bodily functions that are regulated by hormones, hence causing some side effects. These side effects are different in men and women and depend on the type of hormone therapy received and how the body responds to it. Such side effects include hot flashes, loss of ability to have sex, weakened bones, erectile dysfunction, diarrhoea, nausea, fatigue, vaginal dryness, changes in periods if not yet reached menopause, mood changes, etc.

If you are being treated with hormone therapy for breast cancer, then your doctor may perform a physical examination of the neck, underarms, chest and breast along with regular mammograms. Your doctor may also suggest you undergo imaging scans and blood tests. If you are being treated with hormone therapy for prostate cancer, then you will have to get a PSA test done several times during the treatment. If PSA levels fall down or remain the same, it indicates that hormone therapy is working. If PSA levels go up, then it’s a sign that hormone therapy isn’t working for you. In this case, your doctor may recommend other treatment options for your prostate cancer.

The choice of hormone therapy drug and its dose depends on the stage of cancer too. Early-stage cancers (Stage I & Stage II) can be treated with less number of treatment sessions, so it will be less expensive whereas late-stage cancers (Stage III & Stage IV) require treatment for a longer duration with the increased number of treatment sessions, so the cost will be high accordingly. Therefore, the cost varies from person to person depending on the type and stage of cancer, number of sessions required and the patient’s unique needs. Ask your doctor about the approximate final cost of your treatment.
