Kya Aapke Toothpaste Mein Cancer Hai? Lab Study Indicates a Connection Between Triclosan and Cancer

Table of Contents

A lab study on mice links triclosan, a common ingredient in toothpaste and soaps, to colon inflammation and cancer. Learn about the risks and why you should check your hygiene products.

A recent study has revealed that triclosan, a common ingredient in whitening toothpastes and hand soaps, can cause inflammation in the colon, potentially leading to colon cancer. These findings are based on a phase-1 study conducted on mice at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

What is Triclosan?

Triclosan is an antibacterial and antifungal agent used in consumer products like toothpaste, soaps, detergents, toys, and surgical cleaning fluids.

What Are the Standard Risks Associated with Triclosan?

According to the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA), high-dose exposure to triclosan in animal studies has been linked to decreased thyroid hormone levels. Other studies suggest it may contribute to antibiotic resistance. Research is ongoing into its potential to cause skin cancer when exposed to UV rays.

The Triclosan Trial Conducted on Mice

In the study, mice exposed to low doses of triclosan developed low-grade colonic inflammation, which progressed to exaggerated colitis and colitis-linked colon cancer.

Toxic Effects at Various Dosages

The research indicates toxic effects at high doses, but effects at lower concentrations (similar to those found in human blood) also showed increased systemic colon inflammation and severity of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), even at low exposure levels.

Tumor Size Increase & Low Survival Rates

In mice that already had colon cancer, triclosan exposure decreased survival rates and increased tumor sizes.

Researchers emphasize that further studies are needed to understand the full impact on humans. Until then, it is advised to check the ingredients of hygiene products and avoid triclosan, especially for children who may ingest toothpaste. Limiting exposure to this potential carcinogen is a prudent step for personal health.
