Panitumumab is classified as a monoclonal antibody and signal transduction inhibitor by binding to epidermal growth factor. It is a drug that is used in targeted therapy. This drug is used to treat colon cancer that has metastasized or spread.

Availability, dosage and administration

Panitumumab is not available in pill form and is administered intravenously. An infusion pump is used to give the drug. The amount of panitumumab that is given depends on factors like a person’s height and weight and also their overall health.

6 mg/kg IV infusion over 60 minutes

Side effects

Most people do not experience side effects while being treated with panitumumab. Even if side effects occur they are predictable in terms of their onset and duration. These side effects are almost always reversible and will go after the treatment is complete. The most common side effects are listed below.

  • Dry skin
  • Low level of magnesium in the blood
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea

Precautions

  • Before starting panitumumab treatment, inform your doctor about other medications that you might be taking.
  • Do not take any kind of vaccination or immunization without informing your doctor
  • Avoid sun exposure while on treatment with panitumumab
  • Inform your doctor before starting the panitumumab treatment if you are pregnant.
  • Do not conceive a child while o panitumumab treatment. This applies to both men and women.
  • Do not breastfeed while on treatment of panitumumab
